Bahamas Coach Bass

After retiring from nearly a decade in the NFL, Mike Bass moved to Freeport, Grand Bahama in 1979, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living in the Caribbean. What began as a personal journey soon became an 18-year commitment to the people of The Bahamas. Invited to coach the 8-Mile Rock Crushers, Mike introduced a disciplined, professional approach to American football modeled after his NFL experience under Coach Vince Lombardi. His “no practice, no play” philosophy emphasized accountability, conditioning, respect, and mastery of assignments. The results were immediate — multiple Bahamas American Football League (BAFL) championships and the elevation of organized American football on Grand Bahama. More importantly, young players were given real opportunities to grow, compete, and believe in themselves.

After leaving the Crushers, Mike founded the Guinness Titans in Freeport, continuing his mission to teach not just football fundamentals, but life principles. In just their second year, the Titans captured a BAFL championship, validating his belief that discipline and preparation build both winning teams and strong men. Many of his players went on to earn college scholarships and become leaders in their communities. In 1997, after 18 impactful years, Mike returned to the United States — but The Bahamas never left him. In 2023, he was honored by his former players for his contributions to the sport and to their lives, a tribute he considers among the greatest honors of his career. As Mike often says, “The only thing about me that is not Bahamian is my accent.”
